Vintage Sugar is gathering a reputation around the boutique markets of Hobart as a stall all good food lovers should procure! Having, found them on a trip to the Bream Creek Market, I can say first hand you won’t be disappointed!

Q: Tell us a little about Vintage Sugar? how long have you been going and what prompted the business?

A: Vintage Sugar is the home-based catering business of Julie Bannister and Angela Walker. We specialise in special cookies, macarons, cupcakes, cakes and confectionery. Think old-fashioned home cooking with a modern romantic twist! We will satisfy that sweet tooth of yours! Whether it be an office morning tea, ladies high-tea, children’s parties and party favours, bombonieres, weekly lunchbox cooking, seasonal gifts and treats etc, we can do it for you. Let us make those special moments even more beautiful and hassle free, and better yet, we deliver to your door!

We started the business in February 2013. Our vision was to work around our families, whilst feeding our passion for baking!

Q: How did the name come about?

A: We chose the name Vintage Sugar to reflect our love of high teas, old-fashioned baking, vintage fabrics and flowers.

Q: What do you love about baking?

A: Watching people enjoy eating our creations, and it calms us.

Q: Do you have a list of regular items you make or do you change to suit what is in season ? or what else prompts what you are making?

A: We have our favourites such as caramel slice, rocky road, brittles and fancy sandwich biscuits. We use seasonal produce wherever possible, and often it is grown in our own gardens. We love our market stalls and our customers often request certain flavours for next time. We try to have something for everyone.

Q: What is your favourite thing to bake and why?

A: Jules loves anything involving chocolate.
Ange loves anything toffee.

Q: What would be the most difficult sweet you make and what makes it so technical or difficult?

A: They are all difficult in their own ways. We have failures in the kitchen just like anyone else!

Q: What is currently your most requested sweet treat?

A: Pistachio and almond slice is a firm favourite, we always sell out! Its gluten and dairy free, and low in sugar as well! We’re not all about the naughty!

Q: I read on your card where you are available to hire for parties,what kind of service do you offer?

A: Our children’s party packages are in high demand. At $5.50 per child, this includes a cupcake, gourmet sandwiches and a fancy cookie. We deliver to the venue or home, beautifully packaged ready to place on the party table.

Q: Where are you currently selling your delicious creations?

A: Bream Creek Farmer’s Market on the first Sunday of every month, and from December the third Saturday of every month over summer.

Q: I believe you do a version of an Iced VoVo too?

A: Our vintage vovo is a vanilla biscuit with homemade raspberry jam and hand-piped homemade marshmallow sprinkled with coconut. Delicious!
