ooh-la-la Le Provençal!

I’ve been living in Tassie for over 10 years now and on my list of restaurant’s to try has been Hobart’s Le Provençal in South Hobart. Thankfully Mr Iced Vovo and another buddy, who also loves to explore restaurant’s about town (although she has actually been to this restaurant) jumped at the chance of going. So, we found a spot in the diary and booked.

Run by Chef Jean-Claude Rival who was classically trained in Paris, and who lovingly prepares all the dishes from scratch (Note: the sauces are particular divine so make sure you save some of the mouth-watering homemade bread to swirl around the juices at the end!) and wife Julie, who manages front of house with the perfect mix of attention and advice.

Le Provençal offers wonderful French Cuisine without the fuss – that’s not to say the food isn’t wonderfully prepared and tastes fantastic – it just means without the airs and graces….There are small three dining rooms, that make for an intimate (but not intrusive) atmosphere and all have various trompe l’oeil adorning the walls. The setting is more Bistro French with a cute array of roosters displayed around the room we were in.

Don’t be disappointed you must book for Le Provençal, and you’d be advised to do so well in advance, as the restaurant is frequently booked solid as it was the night we went. Whilst we had a room of the building to ourselves for a while a group of about 8 party goers soon arrived and by jingo it is great to see people of all ages having a whale of a time….(I would have liked to know where they had been before they got to the restaurant as they were well juiced!!!). Party-goers aside, they didn’t really detract from our experience but probably added to the entertainment!

All-in-all with great service and delicious meals it was a lovely night out.

Here’s what tickled our tastebuds-
I had:

FILET DE SAUMON AUX POIVRONS - Grilled salmon fillet served with a creamy red pepper sauce and semolina, parmesan gnocchi

Also worth noting is the opening hours as they are more limited than your typical restaurant. You’ll find Le Provençal in Hobart’s South Hobart at 417 Macquarie Street. Opening hours are Wednesday through Saturday, from 7pm onwards. Phone: (03) 6224 2526.
