Smoke billowed across Hobart’s Eastern Shore on Wednesday 29 May, 2013, as controlled burn-offs over the Mt Direction area took place.
Under the careful eye of the Tasmania Fire Service, Parks and Wildlife and Forestry Tasmania staff, the 542ha fuel reduction burn could be seen far a-field.
The burn was aimed at reducing the fire risk in the Meehan Ranges and the threat to the communities of Otago Bay, Risdon Vale, Geilston Bay and Lindisfarne. Many firefighting units could be seen on the ground, supported by one helicopter.
People with medical conditions were advised to avoid the smokey area.
To follow are some shots Iced Vovo took from across the river at MONA, along the East Derwent Highway and from Old Beach:

Fire patrols keep an eagle eye as the fire is close to homes and property:
It looked even more dramatic at night!
