Jack Greene – more than burgers and beer

Recently Mr Iced Vovo and I popped in to Jack Greene a pub style bar/restaurant at Salamanca in Hobart for an afternoon drink and ended up staying for dinner. We opted to go upstairs which is decked out with deer heads, old books, big leather couches and other memorabilia giving it an old world hunters lodge kind of vibe.

There is a huge beer and burger menu to choose from that could make decision making difficult – or is that just a problem I have? In terms of the beer I opted for a beer flight that gives you a choice of four beers from the on-tap selection for $12. This is a great way to sample a range of beers and ciders that you may have never heard of before selecting one to have on its own, or you can just keep on having beer flights and work your way through the entire selection of ales, draughts, pilsners and ciders on offer.

We were very impressed with the variety of burgers ranging from beef, lamb, pork belly, vegetarian, salmon and more all with an interesting array of accompaniments. On this visit we I opted for the salmon burger on Turkish bread that came with pickled ginger, tomato, lettuce, mayo, a touch of coriander and I’m certain a few other additions that I can’t quite recall… While Mr Iced Vovo had the beef and bacon burger that was equally packed full of delicious additions. We also shared a serve of chips that were hot, fat and delectable!

We found the wait-staff hospitable, not overly friendly or jovial, but knowledgeable about the beers. One slight hiccup was the fact that it was a busy Saturday afternoon and we found that as we lingered on tables had been pre-booked for the evening dinner-time and so we had to move from our prime position to a table without a reservation. The other hitch is that they don’t take bookings for parties less than four people, so you will need to get a group together or just take pot luck if you’re a couple going for a night out.

We settled in to our new seat, after perching on some high stools for a while, a long settee near the stairs (be careful at one end the spring and stuffing have gone and you may sink into a deep hole!) and ordered our meal that didn’t take long to arrive.

Overall we enjoyed the food, beverages and atmosphere and will definitely return to try out more from both the extensive beer and burger options.
