The Wrest Point Casino in Hobart is currently celebrating its 40th Anniversary from 14th January through to the 10th February 2013 with a host of special events and activities called “4 Decades in 4 Weeks.”
There have been themed High Teas and quiz nights, special menus across all the restaurants, special musical entertainment, gourmet picnic hampers by the pier, and for the four weeks of festivities, Regines nightclub (a legendary local disco/nightclub from the past) is open again every Friday and Saturday night. Mum and I joined in the festivities by going along to one of the special High Teas on Friday 25th January.
We were greeted and taken to a lovely table for two where a glass of pink French Champagne was poured to start off our delightfully decadent afternoon. The wait staff was attentive without being intrusive and even assisted by taking some photos for us.
The food (which is one of everything per person) is brought out all together and included a plate with a mini quiche and scone and a tiered serving tray of delectable delights. On the bottom tier was a refined “club” sandwich with turkey, cranberry, cream cheese, cucumber and I’m not sure what else, and a smoked salmon open sandwich with capers and Spanish onion. The second tier had a luscious chocolate tart and a custard éclair/puff with an apple flavoured icing while the top layer had a finger length light sponge cake and another kind of match-stick/puff/éclair that was filled with jam and cream.
Mum and I ended up eating the selection in the same order starting with the quiche and finishing with the chocolate tart! Tea and/or coffee is provided continuously throughout the service.
The starting times are staggered to help the kitchen, which is miniscule, to cope with the orders. I would recommend asking for the 2.30 time slot as that way you get to spend the maximum amount of time taking in the view and enjoying your delicious spread of goodies.
The seating is comfortable and what I really liked was that the chairs were on swivels so you could move around easily to see the ever changing view. It took about an hour to do one full revolution around the restaurant and while it had been raining in the morning the skies cleared and the sun came out to provide a wonderful afternoon and clear visibility for us to see for miles in all directions.
High Tea at Wrest Point Casino occurs each Friday between 2.30 and 4.30 at the Revolving Restaurant at the top of the Tower on the 17th Floor. The cost is $29.50pp and bookings, which are essential, should be made by calling the service centre on 03 6221 1700.
