If you’re planning a trip to New York I HIGHLY recommend that you put Brooklyn on the agenda. This suburb has had a real face-lift and is now one of the hot spots for everything hip and trendy.
Make sure you allow yourself time to wander the streets. Why not start by walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and then swing down and walk along the promenade to get some of the best views of Manhattan. Or take the subway to save your legs a little, there are many from Manhattan that will take you straight to the heart of all the action.
I stumbled across the home of WH Auden, one of my favourite poets, whilst roaming the back streets close to the waterfront.
It is also here, in Brooklyn, that you will find an array of fashion boutiques showcasing local designers, shoe shops, tattoo artists, cafes, and my perennial favourite – bakeshops. On my hit-list was One Girl Cookies at 68 Dean St (between Smith St & Boerum Pl) and it didn’t disappoint. (I recently noticed on their website that they have opened a second store at Dumbo – note to self to visit that whenever I return again! And, very convenient if you are coming by foot via the Bridge.)
However, deciding what tasty treats to eat proved a little difficult. If I could have taken home a sample of everything I would have! But with three more weeks of my trip left, and the prospect of squashed Whoopie Pies amongst my clothing, common sense prevailed. There is a small counter area and a room at the side for you to relax and order a coffee or cool drink to go along with your goodies.
There’s nothing like some baked treats to rejuvenate a weary traveller. Just see if you can leave there without a little something for the road!
