Fabulous food in Penang

One of the highlights of our Penang trip was the many and varied street vendors, cafes and restaurants on offer supplying all manner of food for all tastes and budgets.

We tried a range of cuisines on our holiday including Indian, Chinese, European and of course some Malaysia and Penang specific delicacies.

A fabulous custard tart shop that we popped into numerous time on our walking expeditions around George Town.

Gem Indian Restaurant at 66 Bishop Street, George Town. With a large Indian population in Penang we couldn’t miss an opportunity for some yummy curry! And we found the curry serving dishes we’d walked the Streets of George Town to no avail on sale at the restaurant – call it fate!

Red Garden Food Paradise and Night Market, right in the heart of George Town just off Penang Road – offering all many of international Hawker stalls and Penang delights. Located at 20 Leith Street, George Town. It’s a great set up – you find a table and then a drinks person comes to you and then you stroll around the varying stalls and make your selection, give your table;e number and when its cooked they bring your order to the table and you pay. (Sometimes you may pay at the store and for others it is at the table.)

The place I was most eager to re-visit (since being there back in the late 70s) was Hameediyah for its murtabak – kind of cross between a pancake and omelette with either, vege, meat or both. It also renown for its Nasi Kandar.
