Mr Iced Vovo and I decided over a year ago that we would get a pet and really we both thought that it could only be a dog. So we set ourselves the task of researching breeds we like and thinking about what would best match our lifestyle, home and work situations. Funnily enough we both came up with the same dog – the Boston Terrier!
Our next step then was trying to find out where we could get a Boston from and after again much research and contacting the Tasmanian Dog Breeders Association we finally got on to Annette and John at Talawha Kennels at Lucaston, Tasmania.
As there are limited Boston Breeders in Tasmania (I think Anette and John are the only ones…and very few nationally) we were put on a waiting list for our puppy. Ten months later we got the call that Sugar had had a litter and one of the pups would be ours.
We were delighted as we had already nutted out Poppy as the name for our dog and had even started purchasing a few necessities to make her transition to her new home as best as we could.
As anyone with a new pup would know the first couple of weeks have definitely had there ups and downs – with moments seeing us all in tears – but overall it has been a wonderful learning experience.
We’ve had Poppy’s first visit to the Vet which was thankfully very easy and she didn’t baulk at the needle nor seem to have any reaction afterwards.
We got on to Puppy classes also promptly and have been along to two sessions – the first consisted of going over some basics such as reaffirming your pet’s name; using positive reinforcement; using the ‘swap’ command to exchange toys/items your pup might have in its mouth; and some puppy play-time and learning what to look out for when your dog is interacting with others. The second was establishing the ‘look’ command making direct contact with your puppy’s eyes; having ‘time-out’ when puppy is nipping or biting during play and won’t stop or working themselves into a frenzy; having a crate or secure space for the puppy to be when your not home and again some puppy-play time.
