The Australian Football League (AFL) is about to kick off tonight for another bumper season and if you haven’t got on board the AFL juggernaut then it is not too late!
The AFL formerly Victoria Football League (VFL) started in 1897 in Victoria and has grown steadily over the years to today where there are now 19 teams in the league, nine from Melbourne, one from regional Victoria and the rest from other Australian States. Despite a lot of lobbying not all States and Territories have a team represented yet!
I, like many supporters was born into a team, St Kilda. It was the team of my father, who lived in St Kilda and of where I was born and raised for the first few years of my life, and of his father and so the family tradition has continued. And, despite our team not winning a premiership since 1966 we still live in hope that this year the moon and stars will line up and “our boys” will get the ball between the posts and the premiership for the club!
Everyone starts off the footy season filled with optimism that “this will be our year!” It isn’t usually until towards the final stages, coming up to the finals weeks, that fans have to try and remain firm in their hopes and dreams that their team will make the finals this year – and when they don’t, well there is always next year!
If your partner is an avid fan and you’re not, there is still light at the end of the tunnel – why not entice him/her to go to Melbourne for one of the finals matches and you can tag along for a shopping/gallery/whatever grabs your fancy spree and to provide moral support too, of course!
I have always loved going to the footy and find nothing more cathartic than screaming out at the top of my lungs words of encouragement as I watch my team do their best out on the field – and who doesn’t love getting dressed up in your club colours and getting in to the match atmosphere by grabbing a cold beer and hot pie to boot!
