Based on the series of fantasy novels from George R.R. Martin called A Song of Ice and Fire the TV series is set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos. Without giving too much away the plot revolves around three sub plots: the fight of several families for power over the seven kingdoms to take control of the Iron Throne; the threat of the next winter that is feared to be long and dangerous; and the final is the battle of an exiled dynasty to reclaim the throne.
The characters are all strong and complex and push the bounds ensuring that the series explores issues such as religion, sexuality, morality, crime, punishment, social order etc. It would be too hard to pick out a single actor that is particularly exceptional as the entire cast is superb and includes Sean Bean as Ned Stark, Peter Drinklage as Tyrion Lannister and Emilia Clarke as Dany Targaryen to name but a few. What I also love about this series is that there are a number of exceptional female roles from young to old with the likes of Maisie Williams as the young Arya Stark.
It is not for the feint-hearted as there are numerous gory battle scenes, brutal murders and slayings of one form or another throughout.
Filmed between a Belfast studio and on location in Northern Ireland, Iceland, Morocco, Malta and Croatia the scenery is wild and breathtaking.
Mr Iced Vovo and I have just finished watching the first series on DVD and are eagerly awaiting the release of the second season’s box set. The third season of the series is to premiere on TV in the US on March 31, 2013.
Thanks must go out to my Film & TV buddy Ed for getting Mr Iced Vovo and I hooked on The Game of Thrones and he has also told me that the books are just as good so I have added them to my list of reading for this year!
