ollie and ruby takes you on a playful journey

ollieandruby is the delightful creation of Heather Froome from Thirroul in NSW, Australia. I love the welcome to Heather’s Etsy page as she says, “Sit down, have a cup of tea and enjoy the journey…” and that’s exactly what you want to do. I travelled back to my childhood reminiscing about my grandmother and her love for crocheting, knitting and the like and you can really see this passion for handiwork in Heather’s collection of crotchet bunting, jewellery, Plant nests and more…

Iced Vovo found out more about the ollieandruby story:

Q: ollieandruby is a great mix of handmade items including crochet bunting, garlands, and jewellery – How did you originally get interested in making things?

A: I have always made things…from as early as I can remember. My mum is wonderful with her hands and from a very young age taught me everything I know. I absolutely love creating and there isn`t often a day that goes by where I`m not making something for myself or others.

Q: How did your love of creating and crafting then transpire into your Etsy shop?

A: I have always made things for myself and family/friends. With being a stay at home mum, I felt that I should give it a go starting a small creative business from home. It`s great as it is flexible and allows me to still be there for my kids. Etsy is a great platform to show your products to a massive audience, who appreciate handmade. And all from the comforts of home!

Q: The jewellery range is an interesting mix of materials and techniques can you tell us a little about this range?

A: With regard to my jewellery range, I`m quite versatile in the technique however love to stick to fibre, in it`s varying forms. I love big, chunky, textural neckpieces particularly for myself…so I tend to make what makes me happy.

Q: The crochet plant nests are a fabulous idea – what inspired this range?

A: I adore thick chunky textural pieces, whether it be for around my neck or hanging in my home. I love the idea of using something not for its original purpose and I found rope to be a really fun product to work with.

Q: What do you most love making and why?

A: I really enjoy making the crochet hanging pods….they are just so very therapeutic! They quickly take shape and seem to have a life of their own…
Also felting is fun, fun, fun. The results are amazing. I will never tire of the felting process.

Q: What’s the most popular item in your shop at the moment?

A: At the moment the crochet hanging pods seem to be the most popular…its so dynamic though, constantly changing.

Q: What new items/techniques have you got in mind to try next?

A: My new obsession or vice at the moment is definately felting…both the technique and products. I think I could live in a world full of felt quite happily! I have many ideas in the pipeline, so keep an eye out for more ollieandruby felted goodness ;)
