&Attorney Footwear is entirely designed, developed and hand-made in Australia and is the passion of Lauren and Mitch, the dynamic duo behind the label based in Melbourne, Victoria.
Being quite partial to shoes myself I contacted Mitch to find out a little more about the duo and the label:
A: We both share a fond infatuation with footwear. Whilst overseas, Lauren was working with a designer who was renowned for her shoes. This provided an invaluable insight into the shoemaking process and allowed Lauren to try hear hand at designing the perfect pair. This only heightened our love and appreciation of the craft. On our return home, disheartened by the lack of Australian made footwear we saw an opportunity for someone to have a go at rectifying this situation.
Q: Have you been formally trained in shoe design and making or how did you learn the craft?
A: Lauren is formally trained in fashion design but not footwear specifically. She learnt a lot during her time overseas but once we set out on our footwear dream we quickly realised how much we didn’t know! I come from a marketing background but have done a number of shoemaking courses and am capable of knocking up a pretty ghastly pair of shoes but that’s enough for our current arrangement.
Q: Is there just the two of you making the shoes or do you have a team behind you?
A: We work on the designing, sourcing and sampling of the styles and then when it comes to production we have a team that we work very closely with. They are an absolute joy to work with and there is no way we could, or would want to survive without them.
Q: The designs are very clean lined and modern, has this always been your design aesthetic or how have the designs evolved?
A: We’re not overly complicated people so I guess that reflects in our designs. We are very much from the ‘less is more’ way of thinking and are constantly pressuring ourselves not to overdo things. In footwear, there isn’t much that hasn’t been done and the classics are classics for a reason. We merely want to take what we love and put our our personal take on it.
Q: Where do you source your materials from?
A: As much as we can we use all Australian leathers and finishings. Unfortunately with the decline of the Australian footwear industry this is becoming harder and harder. Even so we are passionate about preserving what is left, even if it means paying a little (in some cases a lot) more.
Q: What design do you most like to make and why?
A: From what is currently available, my favourite style is the Lonsdale heel. I really like the use of knotting combined with a simple silhouette. However I am absolutely in love with the Flinders boot from our upcoming winter range, but you’ll have to wait a little bit to see that one
Q: What would be the most technically difficult shoe in your collection to make and why?
A: The Brogue detailing on the Lovecat is painstaking but once again I would have to say the Lonsdale heel. To hand tie the knotting on every single pair and get it to, not only look perfect, but also provide the right length between straps so it doesn’t pull or go slack was quite an effort.
Q: What new design/s are you currently working on that you might be able to give us a sneak peek about?
A: Well I have already mentioned the Flinders boot, extremely understated and something you will be able to wear all day with ease. There is a new take on the Smith boot. We have put our spin on sexy with the Isa heel and we have transformed one of our men’s styles into a clumsy cool look for women
Q: Do you offer any custom orders or is it ‘what you see is what you get’?
A: In special circumstances we can do custom orders. We can’t really change the style of the shoe but can create custom colour-ways in almost any crazy combination you can come up with.
Q: Are your shoes only available through your Etsy shop?
A: Nope. We also sell online through our website andattorney.com and through a select number of wonderful stockists nationwide.
Q: What is the story behind the name of the shop, are you ex- lawyers?
A: Haha definitely not. Whilst in New York we lived on Attorney Street. We had a bunch of potential names flying about but this was the one that had the most meaning to both of us. the & is a reference to the way you give directions in NY. Never by the number but always by the cross st ie Delancy & Attorney, Stanton & Attorney, we were just too lazy to decide on which other street to use haha.
If you’re a little like &Attorney and me and are infatuated with shoes pop along to their Etsy Store or to their online shop (link above) and have a look at their entire footwear collection for women and men.
