You know how I love to browse on Etsy, well another recent find is the gorgeous handi-work of Michelle Tan who specialises in custom making classic retro clothing for women of all ages and sizes (Yes she does plus sizes too!). I instantly fell in love with and ordered the red dress featured and have my eye on a few other pieces to boot!
Michelle spoke to me about her Etsy shop and her classic designs.
Q: How long have you been making clothes for and are you formally trained or did it come from your own interest in fashion and design?
A: I have been making clothes since I was 6 🙂 but making clothes professionally I would say 12 years. I’ve always had an interest in fashion design and after high school I decided to pursue it professionally by attending a fashion design school.
Q: You seem to have a lovely 50s feel to your clothes is this intentional or what are the major influences to your designs?
A: I’ve always loved the 1950’s all the ladies looked so effortless in pretty dresses so I try to offer dresses that are easy to wear and make you look pretty without too much effort.
Q: I know I’m not alone when I say it is hard to find clothes because I’m an odd shape (and hey don’t most of us have some peculiarity?) but you seem to have come up with designs that would flatter many shapes or that can be easily adapted – was this intentional?
A: Yes it was intentional. Like you mention, I myself have trouble finding dresses that suit my body type so I try to design dresses that are flattering on most women.
Q: What do you love about designing fashion?
A: Being able to create from a sketch to real life dresses, then seeing people in them and making people feel good about themselves.
Q: What are you currently working on?
A: I have a new spring collection coming for 2013. There will be more floral and stripes!
Q: Do you do seasonal pieces or just what comes to mind or suited to the fabrics you find?
A: I try to make dresses that can be used through a few seasons but I do have some made especially for summer or winter. I keep all seasons in stock in my store because I cater to many Australian customers and their seasons are opposite to ours.
A: As for right now, yes. I do plan to have my own website soon.
Q: What are your goals for the future with your ‘label’?
A: I hope to have some people helping me with production that way I can expand my business and meet more customers’ needs.
